Write to the desk, not to a queue

Email reaches somebody who can price a file rather than somebody who logs it. If you would sooner see numbers before you talk to anyone, open an application and the reply will have figures in it.

The fastest route in. Put the business name and a rough amount in the first line and the reply will be specific instead of a request for more information.

Around five minutes. No fee to apply, and no consequence whatever if you read the offer and decide against it.

Before you write

Tell us these three things and skip a round trip

What amount, and what does it pay for?

A range is fine, and so is an approximate purpose. Whether it is $30,000 for a delivery van or $400,000 to take on a second unit decides which of the six structures gets quoted, and that is worth settling in the first exchange rather than the fourth.

What do the last few months of deposits look like?

A rough monthly figure, plus whether it runs level or swings with the season. Nothing else lets us work out this quickly whether there is a file here at all — and if there is not, you get told in a sentence instead of a fortnight.

Is anything already being collected against the business?

An open advance, a loan, a factoring line, a tax arrangement. None of these rules you out on their own. What does cause a problem is finding out about them at verification, after we have priced a file as though they were not there.

Send the statements and find out

Four months of PDFs is enough for us to price it properly. Nothing is owed if you read the offer and pass.
